Homeward Bound: #2

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, a very sad, but thankful farewell
to Ben and Louise, our Kiwi friends, who depart London this week.

A MINI PROFILE
  • Hometown: Wellington, New Zealand.
  • Time lived in London: 18 months
  • Our introduction: Ben worked at Spitalfields City Farm, the site of Bryan's first volunteer stint in London.
  • Something we've shared: A perfect holiday in Prague, and the motto, "There's always room for dessert."
  • Something they've taught us: Life is too short to sweat the small stuff.
  • Our newly acquired hand-me-down: Two tennis rackets!
  • Our next meeting place: New Zealand...

Home is where...

I could tell you my "home" blog from September is late because I've been deeply pondering how to best illustrate my travels there. Or I could say it's because I've been so busy traveling, working, and playing. Or I could quit mucking about, since I already played this "I-could-tell-you-excuses-game back in my birthday blog last year. Besides, Brandina is just as busy as me and amazingly churns out a blog post every few weeks.

My itinerary was a bit manic as well - From London, I flew to Sacramento, with a quick 2 hour layover in San Diego (where my amazing brother met me at the airport just to bring me my first California burrito in 11 months!). After inhaling that scrumptious treat, I flew to Sacramento with just enough time to drop off my bags and kiss my mom, before I was in the car heading to Lake Tahoe for Joanna Schaller's wedding. Fortunately I wasn't driving, as delirium set in from being awake for 26 hours, I quickly faded to the fresh scent of pine trees and crisp Tahoe air. After an amazing wedding weekend with friends from high school, I spent a few wonderful days with my family in Sacramento - while we are lucky to have Skype these days, nothing beats a real hug. Then it was off to San Diego, where I literally was driving from one rendezvous to the next, catching up with former co-workers, friends, and my brother, making sure to squeeze in a beach trip, get a few games of beer pong in, watch some American football, show the new foosballers that we haven't lost a beat, and of course eat as much delicious Mexican cuisine as possible.

*On a side note, I recently taught my students how to make fajitas, salsa, and guacamole in the cooking course, and not only was everyone at the farm enthralled by these new mysterious, yet sublime aromas coming from the kitchen, but my students' parents were delightfully surprised when they bit into my students' beautifully crafted Mexican dish. I know Mexico is far from the UK, but to quote Seth Meyers and Amy Rogan from SNL, really?...really??? But I digress.

I truly had an amazing trip home and have decided to sum it up with my version of a photo-poem...bare with me.

Home is...

...where friends are

...where weddings are

...where picturesque Lake Tahoe is

...where San Diego sandy beaches are

...where laughs are

...where foosball is

...where beer pong is

...where real burgers and Mexican food are

...where the heart is

Much love and thanks to everyone for the airport rides, beds and couches to crash on, good weather, and great laughs. Looking forward to seeing each and every one of you over here soon...no more excuses...
